Cellular Autophagy Fasting

Pocket

I have very good news for you, there is a way that you can help heal and repair your body and diminish the risk of developing chronic debilitating inflammatory diseases even cancer. The way to achieve that goal is through cellular autophagy fasting.

Keep reading to find out: what is autophagy? Is this concept based on evidence research medicine? How can you increase your body´s autophagy? What are the real benefits that autophagy does to your body?

Finally, I´ll give you my honest opinion about cellular autophagy fasting.

Cellular autophagy fasting

What is autophagy?

Autophagy or autophagocytosis is the natural mechanism of the cells by which they break down dysfunctional components to promote regeneration and recycling of new cells components in order to maintain cellular energy levels and promote cellular survival.

During autophagy all the unhealthy cell compounds such as old cell membranes, defective organelles such as defective mitochondria and cellular debris, are broken down and sent through your autophagosomes to your lysosomes, which are organelles that contain enzymes that break down the defective proteins.

The aminoacids from the broken down defective proteins are used to form new healthy proteins to repair the cells.

Is there evidence based medicine to prove this theory?

In 2016, the Nobel Prize in Physiology of Medicine was awarded to the Japanese researcher Yoshinori Ohsumi for his discoveries on the mechanisms of autophagy and, why it is so important to our health and, what it can really do to allow our bodies to regenerate in the way like it did when we were younger and, to be healthier and to be able to fight disease.

There is a study published in the Cell journal from January 10, 2019, where the biological function of autophagy genes is discussed and reviewed.

They concluded that autophagy selectively targets dysfunctional components of the cells, in other words, the parts of the cells that are going to break down are the unhealthy not the healthy ones. Therefore, autophagy genes are essential for the reversal and healing of chronic disease and aging, specially in the case of neurodegenerative, inflammatory disorders and cancer.

How do you increase autophagy?

You can activate the autophagy in your body while you sleep through polyphenol rich supplements such as drinking citrus bergamot tea, or caffeine rich coffee or green tea for instance.

Naomi Whittel shared at the Fasting Trasformation Summit how she traveled to Calabria, Italy to find great research on citrus bergamot tea and autophagy.

However, eating a low caloric diet doesn´t activate autophagy because proteins and carbohydrates increase insulin which turns off this process.

You can also increase autophagy by doing certain type of exercises such as interval training or resistance training during 30 minutes. For instance, you could walk during 30 minutes alternating 1 minute fast walks intervals with 1 minute slow walks. Exercising during your fasting hours boosts autophagy so, exercising before breakfast would increase autophagy.

Living a healthy lifestyle according to the circadian rhythms can also activate autophagy.

The most effective way to activate autophagy is through fasting whether intermittent or extended fasting. It is the natural way that your body eats up the debris in the cells and detoxifies the cells. When you fast, insulin goes down and glucagon goes up. The increase in glucagon activates autophagy. Therefore, fasting boosts autophagy.

The most effective fasting strategy to activate autophagy is the water fasting. The longer the fast, the most autophagy you are going to get and you will reach a deeper level of detox for every cell in your body.

How long do you have to fast for autophagy?

Whether it is an intermittent fasting or an extended water fasting, you will get autophagy from doing both.

However, the longer the fast, the more autophagy you´ll get.

There is research evidence that shows that the best results for autophagy are achieved after 5-day water fasting.

Your body gets rid of bad mitochondria and dysfunctional intracellular organelles and then repairs and creates better and healthier cells.

What does autophagy do to your body?

There are many benefits of autophagy such as:

  • Metabolic optimization: autophagy improves the work of the mitochondria inside the cells which makes the cell work more efficiently and improves your energy.
  • Detoxification and cellular cleansing removing toxic and dysfunctional material preventing chronic diseases such as neurodegenerative disorders, autoimmunity and cancer.
  • Fat loss by activating the fat burning mechanisms in your body.
  • Becoming metabolic flexible by being able to use ketones for energy optimization.
  • Reduces de oxidative stress and the metabolic waste.
  • Reduces inflammation, preventing chronic conditions such as: irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, autoimmunity and cancer.
  • Improves hormone sensitivity.
  • Improves your immune systems´ function by getting rid of bacteria, viral infections and parasites.
  • Improves muscle performance by removing dysfunctional cells.
  • Improves genetic DNA repairing preventing cancer and chronic conditions. There is a DNA reset, it turns off bad genes and turns on good genes.
  • Enhancing stem cell production after 3-4-5 days of water fasting. Stem cells are the cells in the bone marrow that has the potential to differentiate and form the new cells of any kind of tissue in your body.
  • Improves quality of life and longevity.

Cellular autophagy fasting

My final opinion about cellular autophagy fasting

Cellular autophagy fasting is a natural biological process that renews, repairs and rejuvenates your body to make you healthier and more energetic. It´s a powerful natural mechanism that heals and detoxifies your body.

Fasting brings the most value for activating the autophagy healing and repairing mechanisms so, I highly recommend fasting as part of a healthy lifestyle. Your body will break down dysfunctional components while you fast and then, your body will rebuild and repair healthy cells during the hours you eat a healthy well-balanced nutritious diet based on whole unprocessed foods.

  1. I didn’t know that fasting helps in cellular autophagy. I’m not usually a person to fast because I don’t like to get hungry and ignore food. I can stay hours without eating though but, when hunger comes, I eat. With this, I’ll learn how to fast more, since its benefits are becoming numerous.

  2. I have been looking into fasting for quite some time. Back in the day, I used to do the cleanse, which was essentially fasting. It was just lemon water with maple syrup on the inside of it. I know that one of the big talking points of how this was healthy was because, if you’re ever in a serious accident or have a real medical issue, the first thing that they do is to stop food intake and basically hook you up to something to sustain you. I do however have to say I have no idea how to pronounce this type of fasting LOL but great article. Interesting to know that there are summits about fasting, I wish I guess there’s no snacks during the break! 😀

  3. Hi Dr. Veronica,

Thanks for your very informative article. I am not a  medical professional so obviously I didn’t know Authophagy. That’s why I thank you for this article. You informed me about a way on rejuvenating my body naturally by fasting. But my Q is, is it safe to do fasting? Or do you have Autophagy Fasting Plan for people interested on this?

    • Hi Emman,

Fasting is a very safe healthy strategy that most people can do. However, if the person has any medical condition, it is always advisable to ask the physician before attempting to do it, because the doctor would need to adjust the medications.

There are some people who should not fast such as pregnant women, children, and people with type 1 diabetes for instance. Therefore, if you have any doubts whether you could fast because of any medical condition, always ask your doctor who knows you.

I wrote an article that particularly answers your question, you can look it up at this link: https://myhealthylivingsite.com/is-fasting-a-healthy-lifestyle

  4. Thanks so much for this piece. It’s a good reminder of the ways one can live a healthy life and avoid the risk of toxins which could be cancerous. Autophagy as I understand detoxifies every toxin in the body. Such toxins could cause cancer and some quicken aging process. But I thank God for the natural means of detoxification of these toxins.

You are absolutely right by saying that fasting increases autophagy. Oh yes, fasting actually detoxifies the body accumulated toxins and when that is done, the individual feels stronger. I equally urge everyone to embark on fasting once in a while in order to increase autophagy.

    • Hello Kenechi,

I´m glad you liked my article.

      Thank you for your comment.
