There is a study published in the Cell journal from January 10, 2019, where the biological function of autophagy genes is discussed and reviewed.
They concluded that autophagy selectively targets dysfunctional components of the cells, in other words, the parts of the cells that are going to break down are the unhealthy not the healthy ones. Therefore, autophagy genes are essential for the reversal and healing of chronic disease and aging, specially in the case of neurodegenerative, inflammatory disorders and cancer.
How do you increase autophagy?
You can activate the autophagy in your body while you sleep through polyphenol rich supplements such as drinking citrus bergamot tea, or caffeine rich coffee or green tea for instance.

However, eating a low caloric diet doesn´t activate autophagy because proteins and carbohydrates increase insulin which turns off this process.
You can also increase autophagy by doing certain type of exercises such as interval training or resistance training during 30 minutes. For instance, you could walk during 30 minutes alternating 1 minute fast walks intervals with 1 minute slow walks. Exercising during your fasting hours boosts autophagy so, exercising before breakfast would increase autophagy.
Living a healthy lifestyle according to the circadian rhythms can also activate autophagy.
The most effective way to activate autophagy is through fasting whether intermittent or extended fasting. It is the natural way that your body eats up the debris in the cells and detoxifies the cells. When you fast, insulin goes down and glucagon goes up. The increase in glucagon activates autophagy. Therefore, fasting boosts autophagy.
The most effective fasting strategy to activate autophagy is the water fasting. The longer the fast, the most autophagy you are going to get and you will reach a deeper level of detox for every cell in your body.
How long do you have to fast for autophagy?
Whether it is an intermittent fasting or an extended water fasting, you will get autophagy from doing both.
However, the longer the fast, the more autophagy you´ll get.
There is research evidence that shows that the best results for autophagy are achieved after 5-day water fasting.
Your body gets rid of bad mitochondria and dysfunctional intracellular organelles and then repairs and creates better and healthier cells.
