What is inflammation in the body?

Inflammation is the reaction of your body attacking an external factor such as a virus or bacteria, but sometimes, when the process stays overtime, the body might start attacking itself and that´s when chronic disease starts in the body.

10 tips how to cure inflammation in the body | what causes inflammation in the body

What causes inflammation in the body?

There is always some kind of factor or stress that causes inflammation in the body. It could be environmental factors (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, chemicals, radiation), physical stress (injuries) or emotional stress (depression, anxiety). It doesn´t matter what type of stress you have been going through, it all goes down the same path in your body with the release of cortisol, the stress hormone and the start of chronic disease when the acute inflammation doesn´t solve properly.

Acute inflammation is caused by an environmental factor such as bacteria or viruses or a physical factor such as an injury. The body reacts sending substances such as tissue hormones, bradikinin and histamine to the injured tissue and inflammatory mediators that will increase the permeability of the blood cells and tissue cells.

Therefore, the area of inflammation will appear red, swollen, hot, painful and lose its function. Some examples of acute inflammation are acute infections such as sinusitis, bronchitis or appendicitis.

However, sometimes the inflammation doesn´t solve because the body can´t eliminate effieciently the pathogen (virus, bacteria, fungi, chemicals) so it remains in the body and it becomes chronic. Slowly, over months or years, there are substances that are released to fight not only the aggressor but the own body as well so, an autoinflamatory and over active autoimmune response is generated, in other words, the body fights against its own cells by mistake.

Therefore, the person might feel different symptoms such as fatigue, abdominal pain, joint pain, rash or fever amongst many other symptoms. Some examples of chronic inflammation are psoriasis, asthma or irritable bowel syndrome.

how to cure inflammation in the body

How to cure inflammation in the body?

When you have signs of acute or chronic inflammation, it is very important that you visit your physician and ask him for help because the faster the inflammation process gets treated, the faster you are going to have a successful recovery and the least likely you´ll get any complications or chronic discomforts.

Some Inflammations are usually treated easily with antibiotics when there is an infectious cause by bacteria, some viruses, fungi or parasites. Sometimes, anti-inflammatory medications will be given to reduce pain and inflammation, depending on the cause of the problem the doctor might choose from a wide variety of them.

The most common used are the Non Steroidal Anti-inflammatory drugs NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and aspirin for example. If you have any contraindication for the use of NSAIDs, such as allergies or stomach ulcers, your doctor might make the decision of giving you some medication to reduce the pain such as acetaminophen or paracetamol, even though it won´t reduce the inflammation.

There are some specific pathologies that will only get better with corticosteroid treatment such as asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and allergic reactions among many others. Corticosteroids have too many side effects, that is why they are given only when really needed because the benefit of the treatment out wins the risks.

Usually the antibiotics and anti inflammatory treatment will affect the microbiome in your body so, the inflammation process might not be over at all, and you´ll need to take into consideration other aspects of your life so that, you can gain full recovery.

There is more than antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs for the treatment of body inflammation specially when we are talking about chronic whole body inflammation.

foods that fight inflammation in the body

Foods that fight inflammation in the body

Eat enough probiotics, (yogurt, soft cheese, pickles) in other words, the fermented foods that bring a good microbiome (good colon bacteria) to your body. Also, eat prebiotics, (garlic, onions, bananas, oatmeal) the high fiber foods that allow the microbiome to proliferate, in other words, the foods that allow to grow the good bacteria in your colon.

Stay away from sugary (soda and sweet drinks), processed foods and refined carbohydrates (white bread, pastries) that trigger sugar addiction and cause a pro-inflammatory chronic state in the body. Avoid fried food (french fries), processed red meat (burgers, hot dogs, sausages) and fats (margarine, lard).

Chose fresh fruits (oranges, strawberries, grapes, cherry) and vegetables (leafy greens, spinach, tomatoes, avocado) which are rich in poliphenols and antioxidants therefore, having an anti inflammatory effect. Learn to get used to eat healthy foods like legumes, whole grains and beans.

Always prefer foods that are rich in omega 3 like fish (salmon, sardines, tuna, sea food), nuts (walnuts, almonds), seeds (linseed), olive oil, canola oil. They have an anti-inflammatory effect. When you are in need of something sweet choose healthy options, for instance, a piece of dark chocolate 70% cocoa is always a good choice to ease your cravings.

In my opinion, a good and healthy anti-inflammatory diet that I would recommend is the Mediterranean diet, which is high in fruits, vegetables, fish, whole grains, nuts and healthy oils. Learning to eat like the Mediterranean diet is very healthy for your mind and body, it will help you live a healthier and happier life.

move to reduce inflammation in the body

Move to reduce inflammation in the body

Movement or regular physical activity changes your microbiome and reduces inflammation in the body. A study showed that physical activity (2.5 hours per week of moderate to vigorous physical activity) is associated with lower inflammatory markers over a 10-year period.

In my opinion, you don´t necesarily have to join a gym to get enough physical activity, you could just keep active every day in your own day to day activities, such as take the stairs every day instead of the elevator, park your car a little further when you go to the mall, walk your dog every day, or just go out and play with your kids, the possibilities to get moving every day are endless.

Don´t over think it, just make the desition of getting up from the TV or off the computer and take action for a healthier life. Bring your family and friends in the process too, because that extra peer pressure will help you get out of the coach every day.

keep a healthy gut

Keep a healthy gut

All the nutrients that you eat are absorbed in your digestive system specially at the small intestine so, in order to feel with energy you need your gut to work properly. When your digestive system doesn´t work properly chronic inflammation starts and you feel week and fatigued.

If you have irritable bowel syndrome for instance, you are not absorbing all the nutrients as you should. For more information about this topic read my review about IBS and SIBO. If you would like to attend the online summit about IBS and SIBO, read my IBS and SIBO news here.

Reduce exposure to allergens and chemicals to reduce inflammation in the body

Reduce exposure to allergens and chemicals

Some allergies might be the cause of an inflammatory response from your body. The most frequent allergens are: gluten, eggs, yeast, sea food, peanuts, soy products. Every person is different so, you have to know how your body reacts when you eat some potential allergen and, it is very important to recognize if you are allergic to a substance, then it´s mandatory that you stay away from it.

There are many chemicals that could be involved in inflammation so, try to stay away from air pollutants, pesticides, products that contain lead or mercury and insecticides. Some chemicals might be absorbed through the skin, others via the digestive system. Try to eat organic food whenever possible and make sure that the water you drink is safe and the air is clean.

Get enough sleep to reduce inflammation in the body

Get enough sleep to reduce inflammation in the body

It is important to get enough sleep every night, some people might need 7-8 hours, others 9-10 hours, it depends on your age, very young children need 12 hours. Some studies have reported that loss of sleep, even for just one night, might trigger the inflammatory response in the body. Lack of sleep might trigger the accumulation of a harmful protein amyloid in the brain which is associated with inflammation. It is seen in patients with post-traumatic stress and is associated with an increased risk to develop dementia.

Getting a good night sleep every day, can lower the risk of suffering from dementia, heart disease, autoimmune and inflammatory disorders. Getting enough sleep every night is vital for a healthy body.

stop smoking to reduce inflammation in the body

Stop smoking to reduce inflammation in the body

Some studies have shown that smoking is associated with a higher inflammation and atherosclerosis. The higher the pack-year quartiles, the higher the inflammation. On the other hand, time since quitting in former smokers is associated with lower inflammation and lower atherosclerosis.

Take action and quit smoking today.

earth grounding reduces inflammation in the body

Earth grounding reduces inflammation in the body

Do you remember when you were a kid and, loved to go barefoot around the house? Well, it turns out that, it is a very healthy and recommendable practice for well-being.

Environmental medicine always does research on the impact of the environment in health, sometimes the impact is negative and sometimes it is beneficial for human´s health. There is a study that showed that reconnecting with Earth electrons by walking barefoot 30 minutes a day reduced pain, stress, inflammation and poor sleep. It also improved cardiovascular arrhythmia, high blood pressure, hypercoagulable blood and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and multiple sclerosis.

There is a logical explanation for the earth grounding anti inflammatory effect: there has been found a flow of negatively charged electrons (antioxidants) from the Earth to enter the body and, neutralize the positively charged free radicals at sites of inflammation. Earthing reduces blood viscosity, allowing more oxygen flow to the tissues and reducing inflammation.

Spirituality to get rid of inflammation in the body

Spirituality to get rid of inflammation in the body

Some studies have shown that living a more religious and spiritual life reduces inflammation. There is one particular study that showed that people who attended frequently to a religious service had 38% less inflammation even though they were under a stressful situation.

It is important that you get some time of peaceful rest in silence, and that you put your mind and soul to rest. For some people this time could be to cultivate inner spirituality, to nourish your soul with a prayer, to read a peaceful book or maybe you could start attending a religious service and search for meaning, hope and peace in your life.

I think that the most important thing is to keep love and forgiveness in your heart, let go what you can´t change and focus in your present moment living your life without any unnecessary complications with simplicity and love.

If you ever find yourself in a toxic or pathological relationship with someone, the healthiest thing would be to get away from that relationship as soon as possible before it generates serious psychological or emotional scars in your life.

It is very important that you nourish your soul with good relationships in your life where you can be loved and love the people that you care about the most.
